Fargo, ND – Cooking as always been a passion for Madina Omar, owner of Madina Cuisine. After arriving in Fargo in 1997 as a Kenyan refugee, she spent hours grocery shopping and making food for neighbors. She experimented with Ethiopian and Arabian food, adding her own flair to recipes she found online, a skill she still incorporates into her restaurant’s cuisine.
Madina decided to open Madina Cuisine four years ago as a way to support her five children while doing something she loved.
Adapting to COVID has been difficult for Madina. Because delivery apps take a large portion of revenue from each order, her small restaurant has been unable to maintain them. Furthermore, navigating grant applications and tax forms has been overwhelming for Madina, a first-time business owner who already spends around fourteen hours per day cooking and managing her restaurant.
In spite of these obstacles, Madina has done everything she can to protect customer health. She sanitizes surfaces with each new customer and she, along with her husband, sisters, and daughters, who also work at the restaurant, avoid going anywhere except home and work.
Achieving her dream of running a restaurant has been an uphill battle, but Madina trusts her hard work, along with the support of the FM community, to keep her business running.
“You cannot go far without people’s support. This is my dream to have a restaurant. I am always here to keep the business open. I know if I go on vacation or go anywhere it will not run without me. This is why I wanna keep it up and work smart too.”
Madina Cuisine is located at 2225 13th Ave S Fargo. It is open for dine-in or takeout Monday – Sunday from 9 AM to 9 PM.
